Kim “KC” Campbell

Grand Dame #987 was assigned to Kim KC Campbell as a tribute to the tail number of the A-10 Warthog she skillfully piloted following a harrowing missile strike. Decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross, Colonel Campbell's bravery and resilience on April 7, 2003, serves as an enduring inspiration to aviators worldwide.

Amidst the chaos of combat over Baghdad, Campbell, alongside her flight lead Lt. Col. Rick "Bino" Turner, fearlessly navigated the treacherous skies to provide vital air support for U.S. troops. Their mission, fraught with danger, demanded unwavering courage and determination.

Campbell's A-10 was crippled by an enemy missile. With her hydraulic systems compromised, she demonstrated remarkable composure and skill as she reverted the flight controls to manual and returned safely to base. Notably, Colonel Campbell is one of the few pilots ever to land the A-10 in manual mode, a testament to her exceptional piloting abilities.

In her own words, Colonel Campbell reminds us, "You can’t have courage without fear. It’s what you do when you are scared that matters." These words encapsulate her unwavering courage and steadfast resolve, serving as a guiding principle for all who strive for greatness.
